A public-address system puts sound where people are: background music, a page to a zone, or a spoken instruction to leave. Those are three uses of one set of amplifiers and speakers. When the spoken instruction is the fire evacuation, the system is no longer “just audio”. This sheet separates ordinary paging from voice evacuation built to EN 54.
What to zone before the speakers go up
- Who must hear what. A factory floor, a corridor, a prayer room, and a yard do not want the same message at the same volume.
- Noise. A horn that is fine outdoors is the wrong speaker for an office ceiling, and a ceiling speaker disappears on a noisy line.
- Whether evacuation is in scope. If the fire strategy says people are guided by voice, the audio system has to meet that duty, including supervision and a fire-panel trigger.
- Where the microphone lives, and who is allowed to talk over an automatic message.
Paging and voice evacuation
| Public address | Voice evacuation (EN 54) | |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday job | Music and paging | The same, until there is a fire |
| In an alarm | Whatever someone happens to say, if anything | A stored message, started by the fire panel, zone by zone |
| If a circuit fails | That zone goes quiet | The fault is reported. The system is supervised |
| Speakers | Chosen for the room | The same shapes, rated and wired for the evacuation duty |
Speaker shapes follow the room: ceiling speakers for offices and retail, column speakers for reverberant halls, horn speakers for yards and noisy plant. A digital matrix lets several sources reach several zones without a pile of switches. PSS builds public address and EN 54 voice evacuation for buildings, campuses, factories, and public venues, and connects the evacuation path to the fire alarm and, where agreed, to the BMS.
Practical audio and evacuation notes
- Measure intelligibility, not only loudness. A very loud announcement can still be unclear in a reverberant hall. Speaker type, placement, zoning, and acoustic treatment matter.
- Calculate amplifier headroom. Sum the speaker tap settings by zone, allow for the required reserve, and keep emergency and non-emergency sources arranged so the evacuation message has priority.
- Supervise the safety path. Amplifiers, batteries, speaker lines, fire-panel trigger, microphones, and emergency messages must report faults where the evacuation duty requires it.
Commission with the building occupied or with representative background noise. Test every zone, source priority, microphone, stored message, fire trigger, mains failure, battery duration, and speaker-line fault. Keep the zone map and the measured results with the EN 54 handover file.
Common problems and how to fix them
The page is loud in one aisle and lost in the next
The zones were drawn as wiring convenience, not as rooms people stand in. Split the zones to match the spaces, and set the level in each one with the room occupied and its normal noise present.
Music plays, but a fire alarm does not start the message
The trigger from the fire panel is missing, in the wrong zone, or the paging microphone is allowed to override the evacuation message. Prove the message from a real fire-panel input, not from a button on the audio rack alone.
One speaker failure goes unnoticed for months
An ordinary paging circuit does not report a dead speaker. An EN 54 system does, because a silent escape route is a failed safety system. If evacuation is the duty, supervision is not optional.
Frequently asked questions
Can one system do music and evacuation?
Yes. That is the normal arrangement. The evacuation message has to be able to take over the music, zone by zone, and the equipment on that path has to be the supervised kind.
What does EN 54 change?
It is the family of standards for fire detection and voice alarm. For the audio system it means supervised amplifiers and speaker lines, a fire-panel trigger, and messages that still run when a fault is present. PSS builds voice evacuation to EN 54.
Why not just use the fire sounders?
A tone says “alarm”. A voice message can say which area leaves first, which is what a large or public building often needs. The fire strategy, not the speaker catalogue, chooses between them.
